Thanksgiving hosting timeline for first-time and busy hosts
By Aurora Finds Digital · Updated September 28, 2026
Hosting Thanksgiving is mostly a scheduling problem. When each task has a day, the holiday itself gets calmer. This timeline works backward from Thanksgiving Day.
3-4 weeks before
- Confirm the guest count and ask about allergies and dietary needs.
- Decide what you will cook and what guests can bring.
- Order a fresh turkey if you want one; plan about 1 to 1.5 pounds per person.
- Check you have enough chairs, plates, serving dishes and a roasting pan.
2 weeks before
- Write the full menu and a grocery list sorted by store section.
- Buy non-perishables, drinks and paper goods.
- Plan the table and seating.
Turkey thawing math
Thaw a frozen turkey in the refrigerator, allowing about 24 hours for every 4 to 5 pounds (USDA guidance). A 16-pound turkey needs about 4 days, so it should go into the fridge the Sunday before Thanksgiving. Cook until the thickest part of the thigh, the wing, and the breast reach 165°F.
2-3 days before
- Buy fresh produce and dairy.
- Make cranberry sauce, pie crusts, and chopped vegetables for stuffing.
- Clear fridge space.
The day before
- Bake pies, assemble casseroles, and set the table.
- Write a cooking schedule with oven times and temperatures.
- Chill drinks.
Thanksgiving Day
- Turkey into the oven based on its weight and your recipe's timing.
- While it rests (30-40 minutes, covered), bake casseroles and rolls.
- Make gravy and warm sides.
- Carve, serve, and give guests a job: drinks, rolls, or clearing plates.
Keep the kids busy
A kids' table with coloring pages, a word search, or Thanksgiving bingo keeps younger guests happy while the adults finish cooking.
