Halloween planning
Family Halloween party planning checklist
By Aurora Finds Digital · Updated September 28, 2026
A Halloween party for families does not need to be elaborate. A clear plan, two or three games, and simple food are enough. Use this timeline and check items off as you go.
3 weeks before
- Pick the date, start time and a length (2 hours is plenty with young kids).
- Make the guest list and send invitations with an RSVP date.
- Decide on a theme or just "come in costume".
- Note any food allergies guests mention.
2 weeks before
- Choose 2-3 games or activities that suit the kids' ages (see ideas below).
- Plan the menu: one main, two snacks, one treat, and drinks.
- Check your decorations and make a short shopping list.
- Confirm costumes fit and are safe to walk in.
1 week before
- Buy non-perishable food, prizes and party supplies.
- Print games, place cards and signs.
- Carve or decorate pumpkins (carved pumpkins last several days to about a week).
- Plan the trick-or-treat route if you are going out afterward.
1-2 days before
- Buy fresh food; prep what you can ahead.
- Set up decorations and the game area.
- Charge flashlights and put fresh batteries in LED lights.
Party day timeline (2 hours)
- 0:00 Guests arrive: a coloring or craft table keeps early arrivals busy.
- 0:20 First game.
- 0:45 Food.
- 1:15 Costume parade and second game.
- 1:45 Treat bags and goodbyes.
Easy Halloween games for families
- Halloween bingo with candy corn as markers.
- Scavenger hunt for hidden paper bats or pumpkins.
- Mummy wrap: teams wrap one person in toilet paper against the clock.
- Pumpkin decorating with markers and stickers for little kids.
- Costume parade with a small award for every child.
Trick-or-treat safety basics
- Add reflective tape or glow sticks and carry a flashlight.
- Choose face paint over masks that limit vision.
- Stay on sidewalks, cross at corners, and have young kids go with an adult.
- Check treats at home before eating, especially for allergies.
