Dinner ideas that actually get made
20 easy weeknight family dinners, planned by the week
By Aurora Finds Digital · Updated September 28, 2026
The hardest part of dinner is usually the decision, not the cooking. Grouping meals into a repeatable weekly plan removes that daily decision and makes grocery shopping faster. Below are 20 family-friendly dinners arranged as four Monday-to-Friday weeks, with weekends left flexible for leftovers or eating out.
Week 1: simple favorites
- Sheet-pan chicken & veggies
- Taco night
- Spaghetti & meat sauce
- Breakfast for dinner
- Naan pizza night
Week 2: cook once, eat twice
- Honey-garlic chicken rice bowls
- Slow-cooker chili (make a double batch)
- Chicken quesadillas
- Chili baked-potato bar (uses the extra chili)
- Burgers & oven fries
Week 3: pantry-friendly
- Lemon-herb salmon & rice
- Chicken fried rice
- Baked meatballs & pasta
- Black bean enchiladas
- Grilled cheese & tomato soup
Week 4: slow-cooker week
- Slow-cooker pulled pork sandwiches
- Pulled pork nachos (uses the extra pork)
- Chicken alfredo & broccoli
- Beef & broccoli stir-fry
- Chicken Caesar wraps
How to make a weekly dinner plan stick
- Plan five dinners, not seven. Leave the weekend for leftovers, a flexible meal, or a night out.
- Put a "planned leftover" night mid-week. Cooking a double batch of chili or pulled pork on Tuesday makes Thursday a 10-minute dinner.
- Shop once with a list sorted by store section. Produce, protein, dairy, pantry, frozen and bakery. You walk each aisle once.
- Keep one emergency meal on hand. Breakfast for dinner or grilled cheese and soup covers the night plans fall apart.
- Cook to a safe temperature. Use a thermometer: 165°F for chicken and 160°F for ground beef.
