Holiday money

How to set a Christmas gift budget and stick to it

By Aurora Finds Digital · Updated September 28, 2026

Holiday spending adds up because it is spread across many small purchases. Setting the total first, then dividing it, keeps December from turning into January regret.

1. Start with the total you can spend

Look at what you can set aside without borrowing, from savings or from each paycheck between now and December. That number is your whole holiday budget.

2. List every person

Family, friends, teachers, coworkers, gift exchanges, and hosts. Seeing everyone on one page keeps someone from being a last-minute expense.

3. Don't forget the extras

Wrapping paper, cards and postage, shipping, holiday food, decorations, travel, and events often cost as much as the gifts themselves. Give them their own line.

4. Set a per-person limit

Subtract the extras from the total, then divide what is left across your list. Give closer family a larger share and others a small, fixed amount.

5. Track every purchase

Write down what you buy and what it cost next to each name. A running total shows early whether you are on track.

6. Save a little each week

If you are starting in the fall, divide the total by the weeks until mid-December. Setting that amount aside weekly means paying for Christmas with money you already have.
